We were treated to a bright and breezy day aboard SS Freshspring on Wednesday, as our dedicated volunteers tackled a range of important restoration and maintenance tasks.

Engine Room Door Seals

Work is well underway on replacing the engine room door seals, which are essential for keeping water out and preventing further corrosion. The existing rubber seals are clamped in place by metal strips and brass bolts. Pete P, Mike, and Richard have been carefully removing the bolts—some coming out easily, while others require heat or even drilling. With over 60 bolts per door and four doors in total, it’s no small task! New metal strips, bolts, and rubber seals are being sourced as part of this essential upgrade.

Boat Deck

Pete G has been busy sanding down the boat deck in preparation for a fresh coat of decking oil. This ongoing maintenance helps preserve the wood, keeping the deck safe and looking its best.

Wheelhouse

Pete W and Robbie have been working on the wheelhouse, applying coats of oak-coloured stain and varnish. The results are already looking great, with a few more coats to go. While the scaffolding remains in place, they've also taken the opportunity to touch up some of the yellow paintwork.

Navigation Light Holders

Dave has been preparing the navigation light mounts for painting, carefully rubbing them down and applying primer. A final coat will follow shortly to complete the job.

Every contribution brings us closer to securing SS Freshspring’s future.
