Following the success of our Summer Special Fun Days, the Freshspring team couldn’t resist hosting another event — this time with a spooky twist! On 31st October, SS Freshspring was transformed into a haunted ship for our Pirates and Witches Fun Day, and despite the blustery autumn weather, it was a fantastic success.
The ship was fully decorated from bow to stern, creating the perfect Halloween atmosphere. We welcomed 41 adults and 33 children aboard, all eager to take part in our themed activities. Visitors enjoyed a pumpkin hunt alongside the ever-popular teddy hunt, while Trustee Mike Teare entertained families with spooky stories in the crew’s quarters — a big hit with both children and adults.
One of the busiest spots on the ship was Nadine’s face painting, where queues of excited youngsters waited patiently to be transformed into witches, ghosts, and ghouls. The band added to the festive spirit with lively music and sing-alongs, helped by a brilliant sound system and Halloween playlist kindly provided by our newest supporter, Paul Bevan.
The day wouldn’t have been possible without the dedication of our volunteers, who worked tirelessly to decorate the ship, prepare activities, and welcome families on board. We’re incredibly grateful to everyone who helped and to those who came along to enjoy the fun — your support and enthusiasm made it all worthwhile.
Despite the wind and rain, the event was filled with smiles, laughter, and plenty of community spirit. It was wonderful to see so many local families engaging with SS Freshspring and discovering more about our unique heritage ship in such a fun and memorable way.
