This event was originally planned to coincide with the Bideford Fair and the arrival of the Waverley at Bideford Quay. Unfortunately, in true British style, the weather had other ideas, and the Fair was cancelled. However, after discussions with headteachers, volunteers, and me, we decided to proceed with the boat sailing event. The children had worked so hard on their boats and were excited about the competition—cancelling wasn’t an option.
Thanks to Mark, the park warden, who kindly opened up the paddling pool and gave us an hour’s use, we were able to set up and run the event as planned.
At 11 am, around 70 children and their families gathered at SS Freshspring to collect their boats before parading them through the park to the paddling pool. As the rain began to fall, the decision was made to start the races early, giving the boats their best chance before they became too soggy.
Each seaworthy boat was cheered on by spectators as it sailed across the pool. A few needed mid-race rescue from our brave salvage volunteer, who, to everyone’s delight, ended up in the water herself! Spirits remained high despite the worsening weather, and the final race and award ceremony were swift but joyful. Prizes were given to individuals and schools, with plenty of smiles all around.
We were thrilled to welcome Hugh Thomas from My Future My Choice in Bristol, who provided lively commentary throughout. Polly, also from the team, expertly ensured the boats were well-ballasted and trimmed for the choppy (paddling) seas.
Despite the downpour, children, parents, and teachers thoroughly enjoyed the event. With many asking if we’ll run it again, it’s safe to say this will likely become an annual Freshspring tradition.
